It wasn't a joke, Jesse. Some of these guys were there or their dads were. I spent the war at Fort Sill OK, teaching at the gunnery school for the Artillery Branch. Didn't get there myself, but had a cousin who spent two tours of 13 months each over there. Yes, he volunteered to go back the second time. He has some interesting stories. He was on the ground too, not in a boat. Most of the guys here post about Bush and Kerry and not the war.

Looks like your dad was a fine young soldier. I was a 34 year old Major in 1969 and they figured I was worth more teaching people how to aim and shoot the artillery.

"The Press Conference Was Set Up By The Same People Who Tried To Discredit John McCain's Reputation." "The [May, 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth"] press conference was set up by the same people who tried to discredit John McCain's reputation in Vietnam service when McCain faced George W. Bush for the Republican nomination in 2000. It's the same strategy used to go after Georgia Senator Max Cleland, who lost three limbs in Vietnam." [CBS Evening News, Pitts, 5/4/04]
It's just weak to try to discredit a man's service to his country. Has Kerry's service been exagerated?? Maybe but he has payed the dues to be able to do that. Bush and his hinchmen should just argue the issues.
Beside all the Swift Boat Vets for Bush never served with Kerry yet that seems to be left out of there ads. If you are a Dem or a Repub it's just low what Bush and his Daddy warbuck buddies are doing. they just need to leave that issue alone. That's the best thing they can do. Kerry's Record and Flip-Floping are fair game cuz it's relevent. Every time he craps on Kerry's Military Record it makes him look like a spoiled brat.
FACT : Kerry Served in the Military and was honored. Fact:Bush served in the Guard BUT his attendance records were "lost". I bet they are the same place his Texas driving record is. In his daddy's safe.
But you see that doesn't matter. What does matter is that Bush has never made a mistake. That's scarry. It's like he's perfect.

Perhaps I am too critical, but has anyone else noticed that we don't seem to have very many George Washingtons, Abe Lincolns (that was hard for a Southern Boy to write) Thomas Jefersons and such running for political office these days? Think about it. Kennedy (playboy), Johnson (crook), Nixon (resigned) Ford (?) Carter (gave away the Panama Canal) Reagan, (Alzheimers), Bush Sr. (lost to Clinton), Clinton (Monica oh Monica) and now Bush Jr. as the incumbent and Kerry as the challenger..... I would think that we could do better, but maybe we just know too much about the candidates now.

I agree. It is a choice between bad and worse. Either way you look at it. Trouble is anyone truely worthy of the position would never run. It is all about money and who-you-know (or blow). It's more about looks and TV ads then substance. You've been aroud Poleon... Has the country been this devided that you can recall?

I guess that my first recollections of politics were in the middle 40s when everyone except my father and grandfather thought that Franklin Roosevelt could do no wrong. Of couse Daddy and Granddaddy were Duke graduates so it is hard to tell if they really knew what they were talking about! It got a little contentious during Truman, but settled down somewhat during Ike except for McCarthy (there's a commie under every bed) and Nixon with his checkers speech (I guess we should have known then) Then the 60s were pretty wild starting with the Kennedy-Nixon election and the civil rights and the protests against the war and all. I think the population has always been disruptive when it comes to politics. However, I think that there are more educated people today who think for themselves which is good and more people who don't care to even vote which is bad. It is pretty hard to have a mandate when you only win 50% of the vote of 40-60% of the country.

Matt in that case you have to vote based on ideology and for me that has to mean a vote for Bush. He has cut taxes for everyone once and will do it again. The less money the government has the better these days. It has grown way too large and wasteful. Kerry's record is of raising taxes and spending more $$$ and I can't vote for that, no matter how many purple hearts he has.

I volunteered for viet nam, but only because my college deferment had run out. By enlisting I had more choices in where I went. I got two years at OCS which kept me out of nam so I guess I tried not to go. As for Bush's college grades, he made better grades than Kerry and also got a graduate degree. Kerry has no post graduate hours and has authored no legislation in all his years in the senate plus has one of the worst attendence records.

I honestly don't care for Kerry. Nice guy to be friends with but, eh, flip-flop's too much. I just hate Bush pretty much.
