If we remove all people that irritate us, then we really are in trouble. The right of the free press is paramount to a functioning society. I think the press has become an entertainment arm, and a not very independent one at that. FOX, ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, all fall far short of reporting things that matter. It has become all attack, all the time. txheel brings up points, and good ones, about meaty matters. How are we going to continue to spend like we have and still give tax breaks skewed to the wealthy? Government, as flawed as it is, is just all of us agreeing to do things that private enterprise won't or can't do. Schools, roads, national defense, laws that protect robber barons from plowing under everything for the sake of a buck. The GOP and the Dems have oth really let us all down lately, in my view. If we don't all pay more attention, and have irritating people asking hard questions, we just end up with our head up our behinds, and being controlled by those dishonest enough to manipulate the system. Both sides would be terrified if we had a 90% voter turnout average, instead of the poor showing we do now.
Enough ranting for one day.

Good points, Word. Now if you could just root for the correct team of Blue.... Kansas is my second favorite team that wears blue. Duke 3rd, then UNC. Oh. Gonzaga wears blue, don't they? I like them too, they're scrappy. Nothing against Kansas, Have fun with that monkey on your back this year.

Doing well, thanks. Sent you an IM. Do you think Bush has been available to the press and citizens? He's had fewer press conferences than any Presdent in modern times, carefully picks who he will call on in those press conferences, and has anyone who asks him tough questions moved to the back of the press room. His second press conference in office, he moved Helen Thomas, the senoir correspondent in the White house, moved. She jumps all over Presidents, Left or Right. I just think it's healthy when we have real debate and a real press that asks intelligent questions, and I don't think we have that anymore.

imagine the outrage if sean hannity and bill oreilly joined the bush campaign in the liberal press? Actually, Hannity did the voice-over for one of the videos shown at the RNC, so I guess the "liberal press'" outrage is pretty small.

It's sad when a candidate doesn't want to debate. I'm surprised Bush hasn't tried to cut it to one by now. I don't think Kerry will win the election, but a real debate with actual citizens asking questions would be nice to see, instead of the softballs being lobbed by the media. Bush has hidden in plain sight behind his spin doctors for too long. IMO.

Also tough to find a station that plays Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, John Prine, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, Sean Colvin, etc., etc...... You know, for a KU fan, you sure do have good taste in music. Have seen all of the above in concert. XM or Sirus radio is made for you. Or do like I did and buy and ipod. I'd add some old classics from Frank, Count, Ella, etc.

The republican party freed the slaves, and we innitiated the civil rights movement. Just wondering, when and who in the GOP started the Civil Rights movement? I want to read up on that. Give me some books or articles where I can catch up.

I think Powell will resign if Bush is re-elected, but do I have any proof? No. I think he's a good soldier who has been marginalized and embarassed, and will take the chance to take a powder.
As for your wife, DeeCee, she has my sympathies. Avoid the re-fried beans.
As for talk radio, I listen to a little, once in a while, just to see what the right is up to. I'm not surprised that no one had a good answer, consider the audience. Mostly talk radio is a lot of diatribe on steroids.
Go Wildcats!

word do you ever listen to Joe Elliott on whas? on his show this week he was having Kerry supporters call in and tell why people should vote for Kerry. Most of the responses were laughable. I dont think i heard anyone give even one good reason to vote for Kerry. if i were a democrat, i would be embarrassed By the same note, if I were a Bush supporter, I would be embarassed as well. I don't claim Kerry is the be-all to end all, but Bush, in my humble(?) opinion, ain't cutting the mustard. I would have been impressed if Bush had shaken up the Defense department top brass (Rumy, Feith, etc.), and come out and admitted the war was not planned correctly. I think even left-leaners and centrists are a forgiving lot, and would give the guy a chance if he and his administration wasn't so adamant that "all is well" but we should "be scared" at the same time. Just my opinion.

txheel- I think you and I are alike. I would love for a McCain like person to run, or McCain himself, but feel that the hard-core right would trash him. There seems to be no place in politics for a straight shooter. This is a HUGE election, and I am not a big Kerry fan, but will probably vote that way, only because of Bush's bungling on the domestc issues and equating Saddam as the person who caused 9/11. Whoever gets in, there is a real mess, and there aren't any easy answers. The programs both are proposing will take money, so the deficit won't go away very quickly. The debates should be a hoot. If I were a betting man, I would say Bush has the edge, (it's hard to beat an incumbent) but the economy, jobs, and what happens in Iraq between now and November could swing it wildly in either direction.

As I stated two days ago, political conventions are all "show." I watched them both, and wasn't particularly impressed with either. I thought the Dems should have spent more time on what they would do, rather than harp on the Viet Nam service thing all the time. I liked Obama's speech for the Dems, and while puzzled by McCain's support for Bush, (I think he's positioning to run in '08) I like the guy. As for the GOP, there is no Bush administration record to run on: At home they've raided the treasury and looted the future of Social Security for tax cuts for the rich, and abroad they've squandered the support of the world and bungled the war on the perpetrators of 9/11. All the Republicans can do - is attack, attack, attack. They're trying to plant a little seed of terror in each voter's mind, hoping to freeze the opposition and persuade the undecided that they don't dare hope for anything better. Scariest of all is that it has a chance of working.
It's Labor day weekend, and after this, the real nasty stuff starts. I hope the campaigns start talking about domestic issues, and when talking about Iraq, ask realistic questions. We are going to have to be there for years, or face the fact a thocracy will take over, with a high likelihood of civil unrest for an extended period. It's a prime recruiting ground now for people that hate us. And what ever happened to Osama? Never did hear his name this week.
I'm dyspeptic. Off to take some Tums.

Reading this thread line has done my lefty heart so much good. I sure have missed the old back and forth. How is everyone? Some random thoughts... Concerning the RNC: Each convention tries to put a face forward to that narrow slice of those who haven't made up their minds to this point. Ergo: the Dems portrayed Kerry as a Strong, War-Hero type, and the GOP is dusting off their once every 4 years "compassionate conservative" line. It is all a big show. I like the fact that Kerry has nuanced thoughts on things, and if you look at how votes take place, there is a reason, for one example, that he voted against the monies for the troops. The bill, as presented, had a provision abolishing protections for workers in the homeland security department that was being formed, and Dems (and some Reps) wanted accounting for where it (money) was going, and there was none. This, plus the fact that Bush said he would veto the alternate version of this bill forwarded to his desk with those provisions in it. Does anyone comment about Bush threatening to veto a bill supporting the troops? No.
It's all a game of smoke and mirrors, and right now, the better magic act is being performed by the GOP and Karl Rove. Never watch the hand the magician wants you to, watch what the other one is doing.
Mrs. First Lady: Nice job. The Bushes marry up, you gotta give them that.
Arhhhnold: If you had told me 20 years ago that he would be speaking at the GOP convention as Govenor of CA, I would have had you comitted. He, along with McCain and Guiliani are all jockeying for future positions. Esp. McCain and Guiliani, Schottzie has that constutional problem of being foreign-born, but that may change in the next 10 years or so. Nothing says he can't be a cabinet offical. McCain and Guiliani will both run for Pres in '08, I predict.
What a country, what a life!
Please discuss amongs yourselves...

Yeah. I thought his schtick got old fast. I did find myself watching it when Conan was in re-runs. I'm amazed he lasted as long as he did. I don't think that was his mom. Kilborn is 42. That woman looked about 45.

Thank you Poleon. They're, their and there, while I know it's minor, also drives me CRAZY when I see them used incorrectly. You can play grammarnazi anytime. There is a mon I know, Poleon, I believe, who pointed out that they're using their words incorrectly, in a nice way. What a guy.
