When Maurice Clarett was healthy, OSU had a great offense. Once he got hurt, it was really, really ugly.

Hmm... tough call. You definitely have to have both to win.
I would say that it is easier to win a title with a dominant defense and a mediocre offense than vice-versa. Off the top of my head I can't think of any championship team that didn't have at least a good defense.

ohio state didnt have a great offense I dont know where to find the stats, maybe someone else could help me, but there was a HUGE difference in the OSU offense as far as PPG and YPG with and without him. Maybe not so much in the PPG category, as Tressel will sit on a 10 point lead and run the clock midway through the 2nd quarter, but the YPG difference wil be big.

Ohio state season stats 2003- ppg 24.8 ypg 332.2 2002- ppg 29.3 ypg 364.5 There you have it. A whopping 5 point difference in points. And the "HUGE difference" in yards, 32.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. I meant the games where Clarett played (and not the PSU game or any other one where he played like 1 or 2 series) in 2002 compared to the ones in 2002 where he didn't play.

OSU w/ Clarett was a running team. A great running O can be just as good as a great passing O, but the yardage and points stats will be less because of the shorter game.
