(For now on, so I can get through the season, I'm going to only post a report for the best game in every series and no more Inbox posts)
Atlanta Braves (47-37) @ Philadelphia Phillies (43-42) Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia Series Impact- 9/10
Series Matchup The Braves have 5 players in the lineup today with a batting avg. over .300 including ageless wonder, Julio Franco who has an outstanding avg of .398! While the highest avg on the Phillies is .288 by Plasido Polanco. This game has a huge impact on the division outcome and if the Braves can hold onto a 12th straight championship.
Who's Hot MVP canidate, Bobby Abreu, of the Phillies has done wonders with the bat. He has 20 HRs and has batted .271.
July 9th ATL- Paul Byrd (3-6) @ PHI- Randy Wolf (6-7)
Pitching Matchup This matchup has two pitchers having mediocre years. Wolf made the all-star team last year and is disappointing this year with a 6-7 record. And Paul Byrd has been outstanding at times but fails to keep a consistent record.
PLAY BALL! It didn't take long for the Braves to score as Marcus Giles lifted one to straight away center on the first pitch from Wolf to put ATL up 1.
1-0 ATL Mid 1st
But the Phillies responded right away when Thome brought in Rollins from 2nd in the 1st.
1-1 End 1st
And Rollins showed great fielding in the 2nd by robbing Drew of a hit by diving into the outfield and then catching a ball hit right on the nose by Franco. Then Andruw made a rare bad throw to the cutoff man in the 4th which allowed Burrell to come all the way home. Then Polanco just put the ball in play and the Phillies had two runs on the board.
3-1 PHI End 4th
But Eddie Perez brought the Braves to with in one in the 7th with a sac fly that Drew was able to just barely make it home around the tag for a run.
3-2 PHI Mid 7th
But speed-baller, Billy Wagner, shut out the Braves in the 9th and struck out pinch-hitter, Andres Galarraga, to get the save.
3-2 PHI F
WP- Randy Wolf (7-7) LP- Paul Byrd (3-7) SV- Billy Wagner (17)
HR- Marcus Giles (9)
Player of the Game Randy Wolf- 5.1 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, 3 K

July 9th Atlanta Braves (47-37)- Paul Byrd (3-6) @ Philadelphia Phillies (43-42)- Randy Wolf (6-7) Gm 1 of 3 Citizen Bank Park, Philadelphia Gm Impact- 9/10
Series Preview The Braves have 5 players in the lineup with an avg. of over .300 compared to the Phillies who have none. One of the players is ageless wonder, Julio Franco, who has an amazing avg. of .398. This is the last series before the all-star break and has a big impact on division standings.
Pitching Matchup Today's pitching matchup featured two pitchers with so-so years. Wolf made the all-star team with his performance last year, but is disapointing this year with his 6-7 record. Paul Byrd has been outstanding at times including the 1-hit shutout but fails to keep a good record.
Who's Hot Bobby Abreu has been the star of this Phillies team with an avg. of .271 and 20 HRs.
PLAY BALL It didn't take long for Marcus Giles to put the Braves on the board with a rocket to straight away center on the first pitch he saw from Wolf.
1-0 ATL Mid 1st
But the Phillies came right back in the 1st with an RBI from Thome to bring in Rollins from 2nd.
1-1 End 1st
Rollins was outstanding fielding in the 2nd. He robbed a hit from Drew by diving into the outfield to make a catch and then got to a ball that was nailed by Franco.
But Andruw Jones made a very rare error in the 4th by making a bad throw to the cutoff man that allowed Burrell to get to the plate and all Polanco did was put the ball in play to score Lieberthal.
3-1 PHI End 4th
But Eddie Perez shortened the lead with a sac-fly to score Drew on a close play to the plate in the 7th.
3-2 PHI Mid 7th
But Wagner sealed the save by striking out pinch-hitter, Galarraga, in the 9th to get the Phillies the close win.
3-2 PHI F
WP- Randy Wolf (7-7) LP- Paul Byrd (3-7) SV- Billy Wagner (17)
HR- Marcus Giles (9)
Player of the Game Randy Wolf- 5.1 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 1 BB, 3 K

MVP Inbox Trouble out of Braves Camp? John Smoltz has been openly complaining about his individual performance. (What?! He hasn't blown a freakin' save all year! I guess he wants to be a starting pitcher again just like in real life.)
Upcoming Series with Phillies We'll need to choose our matchups wisely for this series.
Most Doubles! Rocco Baldelli, playing for the Devil Rays, reached 25 doubles for the year.

July 7th Atlanta Braves (47-36)- Horacio Ramirez (8-6) @ Montreal Expos (42-21)- Tony Armas Jr. (10-3) Hram Bithorn Stadium, Puerto Rico Gm 3 of 3
Pitcing Matchup Today's matchup was Armas Jr. who had already reached 10 wins for the season and Ramirez who badly needs a win. He has dropped 3 starts without a win and needs to get it together.
Who's Hot Expos shortstop, Orlando Cabrera, is the leading canidate for NL SS in the all-star game and rightfully so. He has batted .328 and blasted 15 HRs from the leadoff spot. Andruw Jones may possibly be at the peak of his breakthrough season who has been 8 for 14 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs the last 3 games.
PLAY BALL! And just when you thought Andruw might tire out before the all-star break, he hits another deep ball in the 2nd for his 35th. He's now on pace to possibly beat Barry Bonds single season record.
1-0 ATL Mid 2nd
But Ramirez walked Guzman in the 2nd and pitcher Armas Jr. helped his cause with a 2-run double and he was later batted in by Cabrera to cap the 3-run inning.
3-1 MON End 2nd
Then Ramirez continued his slump by giving up a 2-run jack to Vidro in the 5th and was in position to lose another one.
5-1 MON End 5th
But the Braves got new hope in the 6th when Furcal stole second and scored on a double by Giles.
5-2 MON Mid 6th
Then Galarraga made it even closer with a solo-shot in the 7th and Perez continued with wonders pinch-hitting with an RBI to bring in Estrada but was tagged out going to second.
5-4 MON Mid 7th
But Batista blooped one over the infield to score another run and Zaughn got a base hit with the bases loaded to take the lead to 4.
8-4 MON End 7th
But Galarraga kept a hot bat with a line drive to center field for an RBI in the 8th.
8-5 MON Mid 8th
Matthews Jr. found himself at second with 2 out in the 9th and the Braves down by 3. But the game ended with a ripped pitch up the middle that closer Rocky Biddle stretched high to rob him of the RBI and secured the save.
8-5 MON F
WP- Tony Armas Jr. (11-3) LP- Horacio Ramirez (8-7) SV- Rocky Biddle (16)
HR- Andruw Jones (35) Andres Galarraga (7) Jose Vidro (20)

July 6th Atlanta Braves (46-36)- John Thomson (5-5) @ Montreal Expos (42-40)- Tomo Ohka (3-7) Hram Bithorn Stadium, Puerto Rico Gm 2 of 3
Pitching Matchup Well today the Expos had Ohka pitching who represented the bottom of their rotation with an ERA of 8.11! And he's facing off against 5-5 John Thomson. This should be interesting, especially if Ohka can get it together. Who's Hot Brian Jordan got 2 RBIs yesterday in the loss and don't expect him to let up today against his former team.
PLAY BALL The first run of the game was scored when the Expos got a ground ball in the 2nd to score a runner.
1-0 MON End 2nd
But that was about where the Expos' excitment ended when the RBI machine, Andruw Jones, batted in Drew from 3rd for the lead in the 4th and Galarraga's RBI shortly after put ATL up in front.
2-1 ATL Mid 4th
Chipper stayed strong with an RBI single to give ATL a cushion in the 5th and of coarse, Andruw had to get his "daily" homer, and this one was a 3-run blast.
6-1 ATL Mid 5th
Then J. D. Drew broke the game wide open in the 9th with another 3-run homer to give the Braves an 8-run lead.
9-1 ATL Mid 9th
Rookie, C. J. Nitkowski, got to come in for his major league debut and fininshed out the ninth.
9-1 ATLTEXT F
WP- John Thomson (6-5) LP- Tomo Ohka (3-8)
HR- J. D. Drew (18) Andruw Jones (34)
Player of the Game Andruw Jones- 3 for 5- HR, 4 RBI, run scored (This is the 3rd game in a row I've named him POG.

Atlanta Braves (45-36)- Mike Hampton (7-6) @ Montreal Expos (42-39)- Zach Day (9-1) Hram Bithorn Stadium, Puerto Rico Gm 1 of 3 Gm Impact- 7/10
Series Preview The Braves have been pretty dominate over their 2nd place division foe this year with a record of 5-1, but the one loss was an 11-3 blowout on June 2nd. The Expos were now in 2nd place in the division and only 3 games back from the lead, so this series meant a lot. Also the signing of LF Brian Jordan has improved their already good lineup. So watch out for the former Brave in this series. Today's Pitching Matchup The pitching matchup featured struggling Mike Hampton and versitile Zach Day who has come out of nowhere to have an awesome season. But Day has been light up by the Braves in the past. Who's Hot Expo's 2B, Jose Vidro is enjoying another possible all-star season with 18 HRs and .311 avg. Who's Not Braves starting pitcher, Mike Hampton, who started the year 7-3 and has slipped to 7-6.
PLAY BALL! The Braves got on the board early when Furcal yanked a pitch to right field for a lead off triple and Giles batted him in the next AB and the Braves lead before Day could even get an out. It really started to look bad when Drew hit a fly to shallow left and Jordan dove and missed it to put two runners in scoring postion. Then Day's misfortune kept coming when Chipper batted then both in with an RBI double, still 0 outs. Then Day started cursing up a storm when Andruw Jones blasted another HR to give the Braves a 5 run lead with still nobody out in the first. Frank Robinson met with Day at the mound but Day appeared to remain upset and angry. After finally recording an out, Robinson pulled Day and put in Kim in relief. Day was seen knocking down a few bats in the dugout on his way to the clubhouse still angry. But meanwhile Kim got 2 outs and finally the inning was over.
5-0 ATL Mid 1st
Hampton had a 5-run lead to pitch with so he decided to relax a little, but Vidro got a solo-shot off of him in the 1st, so Hampton decide to pitch to his best from there.
5-1 ATL End 1st
So Hampton pitched well from there, but Jordan did manage an RBI double in the 5th to shorten the lead.
5-2 ATL End 5th
But the Braves' bats weren't slowing down. Galarraga rocketed a double off of the center field wall to bring in Andruw.
6-2 ATL Mid 6th
But Montreal stayed alive with an RBI double from Cabrera in the 7th off of Gryboski and and a ground ball from Jordan scored another. But Almanza finished the inning and stopped the threat, but it was suddenly only a 2-run lead.
6-4 ATL End 7th
There might have been hope for Expos before the 9th inning, but Smoltz came into the game to close and the Expos didn't stand a chance as Smotz got his 17th save.
6-4 ATL F
WP-Mike Hampton (8-6) LP-Zach Day (9-2) SV- John Smoltz (17)
HR- Andruw Jones (33) Jose Vidro (19)
Player of the Game ATL- Andruw Jones- 2 for 4- HR, 2 runs scored
Next: ATL @ MON Gm 2 of 3

July 4th Atlanta Braves (44-36)- Russ Ortiz (6-3) vs. Boston Red Sox (53-27)- Pedro Martinez (9-4) Turner Field Gm 3 of 3
Pre-game Stuff Talk about a pitching matchup. It featured two of the most talked about pitchers over the last 2 or 3 years. With Hampton and Ramirez starting to slump, Ortiz has responded for the Braves by getting red hot going into the All-star break. Manny Ramirez has hit deep shot after deep shot off ATL pitching this series and has lined a few RBIs as well. PLAY BALL The action started in the 4th when "Pudge" Rogriguez (Boston's new catcher) homered off of Ortiz.
1-0 BOS Mid 4th
But Andruw showed that he doesn't have to go yard to get his RBIs with an RBI double in the bottom of the 4th. Then Galarraga's double brought in Andruw and pitcher, Ortiz, singled to bring in two runs to give the Braves a 3 run lead.
4-1 ATL End 4th
And Pedro kept getting rocked in the 7th, when Andruw got another RBI on a single and Galarraga followed that with an RBI himself. Then Estrada's double brought everybody home to cap another 4-run inning.
8-1 ATL End 7th
But the Red Sox came roaring back in the 8th with a 2-run blast by Bill Mueller and Pudge's 2nd HR of the game, back to back.
8-4 ATL Mid 8th
But the Braves bats didn't slow down when Chipper put the game further out of reach with 2 RBIs in the bottom of the inning.
10-4 ATL End 8th
Then ATL pitcher, Jung Bong, remained to pitch the 9th and closed out the ATL win and closed the door on a Red Sox sweep.
10-4 ATL F
WP- Russ Ortiz (7-3) LP- Pedro Martinez (9-4)
HR- Bill Mueller (11) Ivan Rodriguez 2 (6)
Player of the Game ATL- CF- Andruw Jones- 3 for 5- 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored

July 3rd Atlanta Braves(44-35)- Paul Byrd(3-6) vs. Boston Red Sox(52-27)- Kim (4-5) Turner Field Gm 2 of 3
Pre-game Stuff The Braves got off on the wrong foot against their interleague rival, but were looking to hit off of 4-5 Kim. Byrd has been inconsistent this year, but when he was on he was definitely on. If he can pitch to his potential he will be great. Furcal has been hot lately with the bat and has showed some power. But all he has to do to be a threat is get on the basepaths.
PLAY BALL! Manny got it started in the 3rd for the Sox with a double to bring in Damon and Boston had the early lead again.
1-0 BOS End 3rd
Kim pitched outstanding by pitching shutout ball until Franco's pinch-hit double and Giles eventually brought him home on a ground ball to tie it.
1-1 Mid 7th
But Pokey Reese took some steam out of the Braves in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run blast off of Gryboski.
3-1 BOS End 7th
And Manny brought in another one with a deep blast off of Rookie, Tim Drew in the 8th.
4-1 Mid 8th
It looked like the Braves might make a comeback when Giles hit one deep to center, but Damon jumped up and grabbed it robbing Giles of a HR. Then the Braves got another chance in the 9th with 2 men on and 2 men out with Gary Matthews Jr. pinch-hitting. He hits it deep!
Not deep enough...
4-1 BOS F
WP- B. Kim (5-5) LP- Kevin Gryboski (2-3) SV- Keith Foulke (23)
HR- Manny Ramirez (13) Pokey Reese (7)
Player of the Game BOS-OF- Manny Ramirez- 3 for 4- HR, 2B, 2 RBI
