01. Oklahoma- A solid performance against the BGSU falcons keeps the sooners in the #1 spot. OU will win the BIG 12 South, then the BIG 12, and then they take the National Title.
02. Florida State- Chris Rix will finally come through this year. FSU has a great team, and will be the favorite in the ACC. Several key games lay ahead but look for the seminoles to blow out some of the big names on their schedule.
03. USC- Leinart needs to play better, and some of the young recievers need to step up. VT gave the Trojans a scare, and probably should have won the game. The Trojans still need some work. however having an easy schedule will allow the trojans to get by.
04. LSU- Played a bad game, but was able to pull it out in the end. QB situation is a problem, however the defense played well enough to give the tigers a chance. WR Dwayne Bowe looks to live up to the hype with a 100+ yard game, despite having a 56 yrd TD called back.
05. Georgia- Granted a win is a win, but giving up as many points as they did to GSU is nothing to brag about.
06. Texas- Great performance against North Texas. 65-0 is a good start. Great play, and what appears to be a powerful running game should carry this team through the season. An improved defense should help during conference play, but until the longhorns actually beat the Sooners..this is as high as they will get in my rankings.
07. Michigan- A slow start against Miami OH, but a strong finish. QB situation still appears a little shakey.
08. Miami- A retarded QB, and a lot of losses to the NFL. Miami will struggle in the ACC with Brock Berlin as the QB. Defense will be strong this year, however it will not be as good as last years. The hurricanes will tie for 2nd in the ACC, and will lose to FSU by at least 14.
09. Virginia- Even with the departure of Matt Schaub to the NFL, the Cavaliers still impressed with a 44-14 victory over Temple. The defense will be solid, and the offense will be consistant. The cavs will tie for 2nd in the ACC.
10. Purdue- 51-0 over Syracuse is a great start for the Boilermakers. Kyle Orton is the best QB in the BIG 10, and he played like it. The Purdue defense was much stronger than I had expected, and should make Purdue a real contender in the BIG 10.
11. Florida- Game postponed.....I just had to put them on here somewhere. I do not have anything to add about the gators.
12. Tennessee- Two freshman QBs. Both gave a strong performance against UNLV, and should provoke some more arguments as to who should be starting. Tennesee will finish tied for 2nd in the SEC east along with Florida.
13. Ohio State- The Buckeyes had a mediocre showing against what should be an improve Cincy team. Ohio States defense played well holding the BearCats to a meger 6 points. Team must improve before conference play begins.
14. Minnesota- A game that was supposed to be a possible upset, turned into a rout. 63-21 victory for the Golden Gophs, is certainly a shocker to me. The Gophers may still contend for the BIG 10 title.
15. California- Cals offense will be the best in the PAC-10 this year, and the defense showed slight improvement over last season. Cal will compete with SC this year, and may come away with the PAC. The defense must get better.
16. Wisconsin- Instant replay had some good moments, and then some bad moments in its first game. Wisconsin came up with an easy win over UCF, and will be very competitive in the BIG 10 this season. A great running game, and consistancy elsewhere could be enough for the Badgers to contend in the BIG 10.
17. Iowa- A good showing against Kent State. Congratlations. I am not quite sure where to place the Hawkeyes in the BIG 10. For the time being I will say they finish 4th in the BIG 10. The defense and offense were good, but I am now unsure of how they fare in confernce games.
18. Missouri- Wow,,,they actually beat Arkansas State. Big Surprise. Nothing really to report about Missouri. They will win the BIG 12 North but they will lose to OU in the title game. As long as the QB is healthy Mizzou will be in contention.
19. Clemson- While the overtime win against Wake was certainly not impressive. At least the Tigers won. With the mediocre 1-0 start, Clemson falls to #19 on my list. The Tigers however should be ready to take on some of their more legitimate opponents, and should finish in a 3rd place tie in the ACC, 2nd place if they catch a few breaks.
20. Auburn- 31-0 victory over the Indians of UL-Monroe. Great. No real change with Auburn, they will finish 2nd in the SEC west behind LSU. 2 more weeks untill the two tiger teams meet, but look for LSU to again come out the victor.
21. Maryland- A 3-point victory over Norther Illinois is certainly not something to brag about. But the terps did win after getting off to a slow start in the first quarter. Maryland will finish tied for 3rd in the ACC.
22. Utah- Beat the hell out of the Texas A&M aggies, and will simply have to play a mediocre season or better and the Utes will run away with the MWC. Then again the MWC is already theirs...why bother embarassing the other teams in the conference.
23. Kansas State- Western Kentucky?? The Wild Cats could only pull off a 27-13 win over Western Kentucky. Great improvement is need before conference play begins. K-State will finish 2nd in the BIG 12- North.
24. West Virginia- If West Virginia was truly deserving of their high preseason ranking, the Mountaineers would not have given up 23 points to a East Carolina team coming off of a terrible season. I am not completly sold on WVU.
25. South Carolina- The 31-6 win over a now veteran Vanderbilt team (don't laugh), while maybe not impressive was just enough for the Gamecocks to edge out the Cornhuskers for the #25 spot on my list.
Just out: Nebraska, Arizona State, NC State, Oregon State, Virginia Tech.
