As a southerner, I am compelled to point out that Mr. Lincoln (that man from Illinois) freed the slaves in 1863 for political expediency and when he free the slaves, he only freed the slaves in the Confederate States to begin with which meant that he didn't free many slaves at all because the South was invading the North in 1863. Things didn't start going well for the North until after Gettysburg and Vicksburg in July of 1863!

Lincoln also wanted the slaves who made it to the North to fight on his side, that is why he allowed them to stay free. If it weren't for Gettysburg, the French were likely to join the side of the Confederacy, prolonging the war at the very least.
