Did Meadowlark Lemon play college ball? Someone told me he played at Kansas but I'm not sure. They said he was phenomenal. I never got to see him play even as a globetrotter. Nicknamed the "Clown Prince of Basketball," Lemon was a fine basketball and football player in high school, but his goal was to play for the Harlem Globetrotters and he spent extra hours working on ball handling and tricky maneuvers to reach that goal. Lemon entered Florida A & M University after graduating from high school in 1952. His college career was cut short by two years in the Army. He was stationed in Germany while the Globetrotters were playing there and he got an audition with the team. After his discharge in 1954, he joined the Globetrotters and quickly became one of their most popular players with his skilled antics. At a time when the best black player were being admitted into the NBA rather than forced into playing for barnstorming teams, Lemon may well have been the salvation of the Globetrotters, since playing for them was his only ambition.

I agree with DevilBear (and since we are not talking Politics that doesn't surprise me). Dabid Thompson was hands down the best player ever in College. I nevr saw him but have heard the stories and seen the tape. My Mother-in-law and Father-in-law (Both Duke Grads) are HUGE basketball fans and they say NO ONE they have seen before or since was flat-out as great as David Thompson. He wasn't allowed to dunk then.
At NC State, "The Skywalker" was a three-time First-Team All-America, three time All-ACC selection, and a two-time Associated Press National Player of the Year. He led the Wolfpack to a 79-7 three-year record, a mark that included a 30-1 record and a National Championship in 1974. For his efforts in NC State's run to the championship, Thompson was voted MVP of the NCAA Tournament. In 1975, Thompson earned the Naismith, Rupp, AP, UPI, Eastman Kodak and The Sporting News Player of the Year honors. His flair and ability to put the ball in the hoop guided NC State to two consecutive ACC titles (1973 and 1974) with perfect 14-0 records. Thompson won ACC Athlete of the Year honors in 1973 and 1975. He was ACC Basketball Player of the Year in all three varsity seasons and was a unanimous choice to each of the All-ACC teams during his career. Named to the NCAA All-Decade Team of the 1970s, Thompson was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. NC State paid him the ultimate honor when they retired his #44 jersey.

As for the Laettner stats... It will sound like sour grapes, coming from a UK fan, and I don't deny he played great in the NCAA's... BUT he got to play 4 years, and there are more games ( 64 teams since '85, I think) so Walton, Alcindor, and co. Can't compete on the totals records. I would bet they would have had more, if in a 64 team tourney and allowed 4 years to play. Again, not denying Latner his due, just pointing out apples and oranges. Oh,I agree! Those two guys (and several others ) would have done more than Laettner did given the same scenerio as he had. Only a fool would think theat Laettner was better than Kareem. He achored the BEST Single Season TEAM of all Time... John Wooden: "I've never come out and said it, but it would be hard to pick a team over the 1968 team."
The Bruins, playing with an injured Alcindor, suffered a mid-season loss to Houston and Elvin Hayes in the Astrodome, but proved that was a fluke in the tourney semifinal, burying the Cougars 101-69. The final was also cake, a 78-55 win over UNC.
How'd they do it? To start, they had Alcindor, the best player in college basketball history, who averaged 26 points and 16 rebounds per game. Junior guard Lucius Allen, senior Mike Warren, Jr., Lynn Shackleford and senior Mike Lynn also averaged in double figures for the season. Also ....From 1972-74, Bill Walton led UCLA to an 86-4 record and two national titles.

By the end of his college basketball career, Laettner held the NCAA basketball records for most Final Fours as a starter (4) most games (148), and NCAA tournament career scoring. He also held the mark for most free throws attempted and most free throws made.
1991 Consensus second team all american...final four most outstanding player..All NCAA tournament team member... 1992 National Player of the year AP, UPI, UABWA, NABC...Naismith award...Wooten award...NCAA unanimous first team All American...All-NCAA tournament team...Jersey (#32)retired by Duke University while still an active player...selected to U.S. Olympic team...Drafted third overall in NBA draft (Minnesota Timberwolves)". UNC's recruited walkon, Justin Bohlander, has decided not to play for UNC this season, saying that he wants to concentrate on his schoolwork. Bohlander -- who had scholarship offers from a number of schools, including Southern Cal and Rutgers -- has no intention of transferring to another program. Just thought I scare ya.

yes, kansas does have a nice group of players. and they are getting 10 extra practices for their trip to Canada next month. That is gonna be huge. Look for Coach K and Roy Williams to complain to the NCAA about this and get the exhibitions in foreign countries banned real soon! Coach K did it last season to the complaints of many.

Woody Durham is sort of famous among non-UNC types for the way he calls games. UNC could hit a pedestrian layup and he gets excited like it's the second coming. Let the opponent's big man steal the ball, dribble behind the back, do a 360 pass to a 5-2 point guard for a reverse dunk, and it's "layup by the Devils. Did you see that inbounds pass, Mick??" Bless him. Anyway, here's an article www.rockymounttelegram.com/sports/newsfd/auto/feed/sports/2004/08/20/1092986393.18121.3133.7007.html;COXnetJSessionID=BlxgU742GnbzZ2xjgxrZbpRhB81U3yY7xeE1j08YZ1d2hL9wsXDF!-1991544962?urac=n&urvf=10930057290070.1670795781344856 about his beginnings. He's a great, great broadcaster, even if he does work for the Tar Heels, and I'll miss him when he's gone - which won't be all that terribly long, either. UNC sports with another announcer is almost unthinkable. [glow=red,2,300]There is also a hilarious typo in this article. Look for the word "fiend."[/glow]

Duke's is out too! Highlights: Michigan State, Oklahoma, Princeton, Temple, and St. John's. But can anyone explain why we are playing Miami twice and N.C. State once? Hey I know that this is a LOUSY Non-Conf Schedule. This weak Non-Conf Sched. aids in the Hate of Duke but can you blame them? They are going to get their rankings REGARDLESS of the Non-Conf schedule. Just based on their wins. ... that's like blaming a hot babe for Not going to college when all she has to do is marry a rich guy. Beside IF UNC beats those top Non_Conf teams and We beat UNC...TWICE then that helps our RPI anyway.

That's a lot of games to be played on one day...why didn't they try to space them out a little? I think that that date is National Two for One Timeout day.
