Overall I would say that is a pretty good top 40. Obviously we are all going to have some difference of opinion, but all in all that was pretty good. The major problems that I see is Purdue being too low, Ohio State being too high, Utah is too low, and Texas Tech is too low. Anyway, keep posting your top 40, I like having something to compare mine to. I like the difference of opinion. And I appreciate intelligent critisism. You will notice that after I looked at your advice on Texas Tech I reexamined their team and moved them up a few rankings. (I had penalized them more than necesary for their loss to New Mexico.) So, thank you, tigerbait, for your input. Please continue to do so, and what i think would be really interesting is reasons that a team I have, say, at 20 would lose to a team that you think i have underranked at, say, 27. I started my rankings system in order to have some enjoyable intelligent conversation about the quality of college football teams. I hope we can have more of that in the future.

And this is the last time I will say the following:
Do not give me pure records as evidence for where a team should be ranked. Tell me why their team could beat the teams ranked ahead of them, or why they would lose to teams ranked behind them.

Actually I dont think you understand how to rank teams by putting teams with a 1-4 record as a top 40 team, no one in their right mind would do that except for you!!!! And yes I do think Navy would definely have a chance against Clemson, from what I have seen Clemson is not very good and was drastically overrated to start the season. lets for a second pretend that the 34th best team in the nation played 5 teams in the top 30. Now lets say they beat 1 and lost to the other 4. Should they not be #34 when they lost to 4 teams in the top 30? Wouldn't you expect them to lose to teams that are better than them? My rankings are not a reward for a good record. They are my estimation of how good a team is. If say, Utah, is solid ballclub but was forced to play, say....Texas, Oklahoma, Auburn, Virginia, and USC in their first 5 games, they would go 0-5 and likely not come close in most games. Does Utah's record mean they are not one of the 25 best teams in the country? (Thats not a rhetorical question, I honestly want you to answer it.)

-Purdue at 15, They have looked very impressive for most of the time and are undefeated and I would put them in top 10 -Georgia Tech #24, they are only 3-2 and have lost to North Carolina and have only beat Maryland -Missouri #31 are 3-1 and probably should be close to #25 -Stanford#33- they lost to Notre Dame and you move them up 5 spots? -Clemson #34- they lost Again and are 1-4 and yet you still leave them in top 40, you have to be kidding me -Texas Tech #37 I would move them up to about #30, they have looked pretty good throughout the year and very good this last weekend when they killed Nebraska -Navy- just out-- are undefeated thus far and I would but them around #30-#35 Just Out that shouldnt be included Fresno State- have lost 2 in a row including one of them to UTEP BYU--they are 2-4 and dont deserve to be there with that record Iowa State- they are 2-3 and have gotten pasted in 2 of the losses Marshall- 2-3 and have not beaten anyone that is good San Diego 2-3 with only wins over Idaho State and Nevado Kansas State- 2-3 with only wins over Western Kentucky(Div 2) and LA Lafayette(not very good) Air Force 3-3 not the teams that have had in past and havent looked good most of the time How did you get these teams just out??, to be close to top 40 at this time of the year you should at least have a winning record. No offense, but you still don't understand the rankings. Don't tell me that teams "don't deserve their rankings" or "deserve a better one." Tell me why you think Navy would beat Clemson in Annapolis and at a neutral location. I still don't think Navy has the athletes to compete w/ Clemson, tell me why I'm wrong. Whether a team "deserves" a ranking sdoesn't matter. Who is BETTER does.

Fullforce, I am glad that you can make a good arguement for your ratings but I still dont understand how you can move a team that won close down a few spots but dont move a team that lost down any spots, it just doesnt make sense. If you lose especially big you move down no matter who it is to. On a lot of my remarks, it wasnt who they lost to , it was how bad they got killed like LSU and Tennesee and some they lost and it really doesnt matter who you lose to, you have to move down because there shouldnt be 3 loss teams ahead of teams with 1 loss. Again with Clemson, they lost to a not very good GT team where they should have won but didnt and they got killed by A&M and lost to a good Florida State team by a bit. And by the way, yes I have seen Clemson played and no they didnt look very good. Wake Forest, you said you shouldnt move them down because they did better than you thought.?? What does that have to do with anything, they will lost and should move down. The way i decide my rankings is I watch the games i can, then look at recaps and stats of games i can't. Following this, I take that information and try to determine a top 40 based on who would win if team A plays team B at A's home, at B's home than at a truly neutral location (just so you know, the sugar bowl is not a truly nuetral location for LSU as the rose Bowl isn't for USC and the Orange Bowl isn't for Miami). Isn't it interesting that 3 of the BCS bowls last year were won by teams in their own home territory (2 in their own city and LSU in New Orleans.... but i digress. If I believe team A would beat team B at home and at a neurtal then team A will be higher than team B. WIN-LOSS RECORDS DO NOT MATTER NEARLY AS MUCH AS IN THE AP & ESPN/USAToday POLLS. My poll position is not an award given to a team who has done well, but an attempt top determine who is superior. (One reason why Utah is not that high is that they would likely lose to most top 20 level teams even in Salt Lake City.) I believe Georgia would be able to beat every team in the nation at home and at a truly neutral site, Oklahoma could beat every team but Georgia at home and at a truly neutral site (though I've been going back and forth between them and Texas at 2 and 3, luckily I won't have to wait too much longer to find out the answer) and so on... But my rankings would theoretically allow team A to defeat team B at Team A's home field and still have team B be ranked higher (This almost happened in the case of Maryland and WVU for example.) A close game, going to overtime, won at the last second, in front of 60,000+ at home does not mean you are a better team than the losing team.

#12 LSU- You didnt change their rank since last week after they got killed by Georgia #14 Ohio State- you drop them only 4 spots for losing to Northwestern? #20 Purdue- they are a lot higher than #20 and a lot better than quite a few teams that you have above them #28 Wake Forest- they lost to NC State and you only drop them 2 spots and when other teams win close you drop them more than that? ? #31 Georgia Tech lost big to Miami but yet you still left them in same spot? #33 Clemson- they are 1-3, how can you have a 1-3 team ahead of one loss teams. #37 Colorado- they lost yet they only drop 1 spot #39 Nebraska- didnt play well but still won and yet you have teams ahead of them that lost that you keep in same place??? You have a terrible bias towards the ACC when you dont drop the teams that lose and yet if other teams play close games and win you still drop them. There is no way there are 9 ACC teams in top 40. The poll in terrible and makes no sense for the most part. Ok, first off, I screwed up putting Purdue at 20, i moved them to a better location. Now, go back and look at the opening of last weeks response were I talk about how the rankings work. Now your specific grumbles. LSU LSU got beat by the best team in the nation who played better than they have played all year, David Greene especially, I was not impressed with them, yetI don't think Florida, Tennessee, Minnesota or Ohio State are a better team than LSU. Now Tennessee is a team that lost some points in my book, you can get stomped like they did in front of 110,000 fans, yet Auburn is an extremely good team. Ohio State did lose a relatively close game to Northwestern, who is not a bad team this year (though i wouldn't call them good). They played about as poorly as they can, and were impressive a few weeks back at NCState, who you will see I think is a very good ballclub. Speaking of NCState, Wake Forest lost in OT to NCState, i didn't expect them to make it as close as they did, so why should i move them down? Georgia Tech lost to the 4th best team in the nation w/o the leading rusher in the ACC and argueably the best Defensive End in the nation still weak coming off injury. Clemson has played the most difficult schedule in the nation so far, they are 1-3, but are better than teams that have 1 loss that have lost to Troy or Southern Miss (Nebraska also barely got a by a HORRIBLE Pitt team). Colorado lost to a decent Mizzou team in Missouri, it was a close game, if the game was at Folsom Field Colordo would've likely won. Nebraska hasn't played well all season, eventually I simply started believing they just aren't a great football team. They are decent, but no better than that. On the ACC in general... Yeah, the ACC does have 9 teams in the best 40 in the nation, the ACC has great parity. Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson, NCState, Wake, VT, UVA, and Maryland are all decent football teams. I guess you would say there are only 7 teams that deserve the top 40 ranking (Clemson and Wake being left out). I would ask if you've watched them play this year? Also the SEC has 6 teams in my top 25 (Georgia, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina ) the Big 12 has 8 in the top 40 (Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Mizzou, Colorado, KState, and Nebraska) the Big 10 has 5 in the top 40 (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan) and the Pac 10 has 3 in the top 15 (USC, Cal, and ASU) 9 in the top 40 is the most for a conference in the top 40, but if the ACC is the second best conference in the nation and the best between teams 5 and 9 (as most of us would agree), 9 in the top 40 is reasonable.

Florida State is too high with one loss even though it was to Miami. Wisconsin- impressive D but still isnt has not beat anyone to make them be #11 Virginia #17??? They are 2-2. Shouldnt be a team in top 25 with 2 losses in 4 games. Michigan #33, still better than #33 especially after beating iowa Clemson #35? ?? they are 1-3m how can they be that high with that record. Do you even know how teams do before you post because if teams lose they probably shouldnt be moving up in rankings? Look, these rankings don't work the same way as the coaches or ap polls. For instance, if the best team in the nation plays the second best at home and wins a close game in OT, i will keep the number 2 team at the same ranking. Or... if the number one team in the nation plays rutgers and wins a close one, the number one team will move down. Not only do i look at the results of the game before posting, i look at how the game was played. Records are not everything in college football. Lets pretend that some time this season USC, Georgia, Miami, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas all lose 1 close game away from home to a solid football team, both polls would likely move West Virginia to number 1 if WVU stays undefeated. My polls will not. In regards to FSU, they lost in OT at Miami. How many teams in the nation would defeat Miami in the Orange Bowl this year? I don't think 5 teams could. Also, FSU dominated that football game and blew it at the end to get the L, i'm not sure they wouldn't beat Miami by 20 in Tallahasee (I think FSU may be the best team in the nation, but they haven't shown that yet.) Wisoconsin's defense has looked like one of the top 5 defenses early in the season, and i think there is only 1 team in the Big 10 that could defeat Wisconsin this year on a neutral field, and thats Ohio State. I don't understand the Virginia comment, they are undefeated and I have them ranked #6, Minnesota (also undefeated) is ranked # 17. Michigan (who is ranked #30) lost to Notre Dame, albeit in South Bend, and barely got by San Diego State at home, Iowa got crushed at ASU last week, Michigan would have to handle Iowa at the Big House in order to deserve a spot in the top 25. Clemson has lost in Tallahasee and in College Station, two incredibly hard places to play, i don't think there are 35 teams that could win in those environments. the GT loss at home was a bad loss, but i think GT is one of the most dangerous teams in the nation to have on a schedule.

How can you have 7 acc in top 25?? sounds a little biased to me. Arizona State at # 15 after beating an Iowa team that was too high to begin with. Not very good ranking in my opinion. I am also curious on what you use to rank them. Tell me who to move and who to replace them with. Is Wake as good as most top 25 teams are in other years, no, but give me a team that is more deserving of that ranking. As far as ACC bias goes, i think its pretty obvious at this point of the season that the SEC is the best conference in football and the ACC is number 2, the Big 10 has been both impressive (OSU, Wisconsin) and unimpressive (Michigan, Iowa). The Big 12 north has been very unimpressive and i'm still not sold on Texas Tech or A&M, though they were good this week. I still think the PAC 10 is number 5 despite ASU and Cal's performances. The Big East is week despite WVU's win this weekend. As far as ASU goes, what they did to a very strong Iowa defense is very impressive, even at home.
